Kiddy and friends

Kiddy doesn’t care how her name is spelled. She knows she’s my favorite Kiddy. If you’re another cat: beware. Humans with a free hand for scratching her head or a lap for a cat nap, are welcome…on Kiddy’s time. She is the most affectionate cat I can remember having. She follows me around. Most days she walks a few yards behind me and only runs ahead on the way back home behind 907. It is the only yard with a big open space. and she seems too delighted in passing me by a few yards, stopping and looking back to see my expression or check to make sure I’m still back there. Maybe she is just waiting for me to open the gate so she doesn’t have to jump over. Whatever her reason, I love having her following me and I love having her curled up in my lap while I click away at the computer. She sleeps over half the day on a floof of pillows and will seek out and find her perfect spots laying in the sun or on a stack of pillows.

We got her to help with the growing population/colony of mice we were noticing back at the chicken coop. We really want to avoid chemical solutions until all other options have been exhausted first. Red, our HVAC contractor, said he had a spare cat and brought Kiddy to us in the fall of 2022, about a year ago. She was an outside cat and looked like it when we first got her. Her fur had some mats that I was able to get most of the way out. One mat I had to cut out, so she looked a little rough for a bit. Now she’s grown booshie and she’s ready to receive all of the pets and love she’s been entitled to… from the people. Friend, not so much.

Our other cat, Friend came to us when a car driving down Wendover stopped in to ask if we could take a cat. They were on the way to Cone Hospital to help a friend who was transitioning into an assisted living facility. Their friend could no longer care for animals and they saw me working in the front yard and said that this looked like just the place for their friend’s cat.

His previous name was Sexy. That would not work. I just couldn’t imagine myself calling out for Sexy to come over and get some food or pets. We went through a few names and Friend felt right. He is a very patient friend to Kiddy so far but I can see that his patience with her hissing at him has a limit.

Ziggy was abandoned in a pasture near some friends home just outside Greensboro. They brought him to us last week and we have been keeping him in a large dog crate with food, water, litter box and some toys outside on the deck when it’s nice and in the shed when it’s not. We feed him and play with him between tasks and bring him inside at night in a pet carrier. He has been eating everything and is growing like kittens do.

On July 7 2024 Ziggy went to live with a friend and former guest and client Marie at her home in Summerfield. Ziggy’s hunting prowess had exceeded what we were able to do here on Wendover. We will check in on Ziggy but know he has a home with Marie and Jojo in Summerfield.
